SIMPHONY OF SCIENCE: THE QUANTUM WORLD

During this week the scientific community has been paying a lot of attention to the announcements about the most recent results related to the experiments carried out at CERN in order to detect the Higgs boson for first time. Undoubtly, the work that Richard Feynman did during his brilliant scientific career is pretty related to the research devoted to the discovery of the Higgs boson. The work done by Richard Feynman is wide, and he is also recognized as one of the pioneers of nanotechnology, in part due to his famous 1959 speech "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom." This video shows, in a very beautiful way, some features of the quantum world, the world of the elementary particles, the world of the nanomaterials, the world where quantum physics rules. Pay attention to the video, Richard Feynman "sings science".

SUPERHYDROPHOBIC COATINGS

At Ross Nanotechnology, it has been developed a super hydrophobic coating that completely repels water and heavy oils. Any object coated with NeverWet™ coating literally cannot be touched by liquid. Any liquid placed on this coating is repelled and simply rolls off without touching the underlying surface. Not only is this amazing to see, but it solves a myriad of problems.

CANDLE SOOT AS A TEMPLATE FOR A TRANSPARENT SUPERAMPHIPHOBIC COATING

"Candle Soot as a Template for a Transparent Robust Superamphiphobic Coating". X. Deng, L. Mammen, H-J. Butt, D. Vollmer. Science Express. doi: 10.1126/science.1207115

Coating is an essential step in adjusting the surface properties of materials. Superhydrophobic coatings with contact angles greater than 150° and roll-off angles below 10° for water have been developed, based on low energy surfaces and roughness on the nano- and micrometer scales. However, these surfaces are still wetted by organic liquids such as surfactant-based solutions, alcohols, or alkanes. Coatings that are simultaneously superhydrophobic and superoleophobic are rare. We designed an easily fabricated, transparent, and oil-rebounding superamphiphobic coating. A porous deposit of candle soot was coated with a 25-nm-thick silica shell. The black coating became transparent after calcination at 600°C. After silanization, the coating is superamphiphobic and remained so even after its top layer was damaged by sand impingement.
