Nature Photonics published in November 2012 a special focus issue on Plasmonics. This Focus Issue covers some recent
developments on Plasmonics including, nonlinear plasmonics,
acousto-magneto effects, plasmons on graphene and biosensor
applications. Briefly, Plasmonics takes advantage of the coupling of light to charges like
electrons in metals, which allows breaking the diffraction limit for the
localization of light into subwavelength dimensions enabling strong
field enhancements.

Alteration
of the extracellular matrix in tumor stroma influences efficiency of
cell locomotion away from the primary tumor into surrounding tissues and
vasculature, thereby affecting metastatic potential. We study matrix
changes in breast cancer through the use of second harmonic generation
(SHG) of collagen in order to improve the current understanding of
breast tumor stromal development. Specifically, we utilize a
quantitative analysis of the ratio of forward to backward propagating
SHG signal (F/B ratio) to monitor collagen throughout ductal and lobular
carcinoma development. After detection of a significant decrease in the
F/B ratio of invasive but not in situ ductal carcinoma
compared with healthy tissue, the collagen F/B ratio is investigated to
determine the evolution of fibrillar collagen changes throughout tumor
progression. Results are compared with the progression of lobular
carcinoma, whose F/B signature also underwent significant evolution
during progression, albeit in a different manner, which offers insight
into varying methods of tissue penetration and collagen manipulation
between the carcinomas. This research provides insights into trends of
stromal reorganization throughout breast tumor development.

The control of heat conduction through the manipulation of phonons as
coherent waves in solids is of fundamental interest
and could also be exploited in applications, but
coherent heat conduction has not been experimentally confirmed. We
report
the experimental observation of coherent heat
conduction through the use of finite-thickness superlattices with
varying numbers
of periods. The measured thermal conductivity
increased linearly with increasing total superlattice thickness over a
temperature
range from 30 to 150 kelvin, which is consistent
with a coherent phonon heat conduction process. First-principles and
Green’s
function–based simulations further support this
coherent transport model. Accessing the coherent heat conduction regime
opens
a new venue for phonon engineering for an array
of applications.

INJECTABLE PREFORMED SCAFFOLDS WITH SHAPE-MEMORY PROPERTIES
"Injectable preformed scaffolds with shape-memory properties". S. A. Bencherif, R. W. Sands, D. Bhatta, P. Arany, C. S. Verbeke, D. A. Edwards, D. J. Mooney. PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. In press. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1211516109
Injectable biomaterials are increasingly being explored to minimize risks and complications associated with surgical implantation. We describe a strategy for delivery via conventional needle–syringe injection of large preformed macroporous scaffolds with well-defined properties. Injectable 3D scaffolds, in the form of elastic sponge-like matrices, were prepared by environmentally friendly cryotropic gelation of a naturally sourced polymer. Cryogels with shape-memory properties may be molded to a variety of shapes and sizes, and may
be optionally loaded with therapeutic agents or cells. These scaffolds have the capability to withstand reversible deformations at over 90% strain level, and a rapid volumetric recovery allows the structurally defined scaffolds to be injected through a small-bore needle with nearly complete geometric restoration once delivered. These gels demonstrated long-term release of biomolecules in vivo. Furthermore, cryogels impregnated with bioluminescent reporter cells provided enhanced survival, higher local retention, and extended engraftment of transplanted cells at the injection site compared with a standard injection technique. These injectable scaffolds show great promise for various biomedical applications, including cell therapies.

The ribosome builds proteins by joining together amino acids in an order
determined by messenger RNA. Here, we report on the
design, synthesis, and operation of an
artificial small-molecule machine that travels along a molecular strand,
picking up
amino acids that block its path, to synthesize a
peptide in a sequence-specific manner. The chemical structure is based
on
a rotaxane, a molecular ring threaded onto a
molecular axle. The ring carries a thiolate group that iteratively
removes amino
acids in order from the strand and transfers
them to a peptide-elongation site through native chemical ligation. The
synthesis
is demonstrated with ~1018 molecular
machines acting in parallel; this process generates milligram quantities
of a peptide with a single sequence confirmed
by tandem mass spectrometry.

"Superomniphobic Surfaces for Effective Chemical Shielding". S. Pan, A. K. Kota, J. M. Mabry, A. Tuteja. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. In press. DOI: 10.1021/ja310517s
Superomniphobic surfaces display contact angles >150° and low contact
angle hysteresis with essentially all contacting liquids. In this work,
we report surfaces that display superomniphobicity with a range of
different non-Newtonian liquids, in addition to superomniphobicity with a
wide range of Newtonian liquids. Our surfaces possess hierarchical
scales of re-entrant texture that significantly reduce the solid–liquid
contact area. Virtually all liquids including concentrated organic and
inorganic acids, bases, and solvents, as well as viscoelastic polymer
solutions, can easily roll off and bounce on our surfaces. Consequently,
they serve as effective chemical shields against virtually all
liquids—organic or inorganic, polar or nonpolar, Newtonian or
non-Newtonian.
TWO-PHOTON EXCITED LUMINESCENCE OF LANTHANIDE COMPLEX IN MONOLITHIC SOL-GEL HYBRID MATERIAL
"Two-photon excited luminescence of lanthanide complex in monolithic sol–gel hybrid material". O. Maury, A. D'Aléo, A. Picot, S. Brasselet, P. L. Baldeck, F. Chaput, S. Parola, C. Andraud. JOURNAL OF LUMINESCENCE 133, 175 (2013). DOI: 10.1016/j.lumin.2011.09.039
A π-conjugated donor functionalized tris-dipicolinate complex, featuring
promising two-photon excited luminescence properties in water was
successfully embedded in a monolithic sol–gel material. A complete
spectroscopic study unambiguously indicates that the europium complex
conserves its integrity in this sol–gel matrix and the improvement of
the luminescence lifetime clearly indicates a stabilisation of the
complex in the matrix. Biphotonic confocal microscopy measurement shows
that the Eu(III) luminescence can be sensitized in the sol–gel material
using a two-photon antenna process, which is a first step towards the
design of doped sol–gel nanoparticles for two-photon imaging
applications.
